EYE CAMP REPORT 2010

Our annual eye camp was held from Friday 12th March 2010 to Sunday 14th March 2010 at the Eldoret Hospital. Well before the event, flyers were printed courtesy of Lion Altaf Bhatia of FIMS Ltd, and these were distributed to all the members and other well wishers of the club. Flyers were also given to the local branch of Nakumatt Ltd for distribution to their customers. Local radio stations Fish FM and Kass FM also offered to publicize the event free of charge for a week prior to the eye camp. As a result of this wide publicity, we received a tremendous response from people from all walks of life who came from as far as Siaya, Mt Elgon, Busia, Bungoma, Lugari, Kitale, Kapsabet and Iten as well as rural regions surrounding Eldoret.

332 persons having eye ailments were screened by a team of experts on Friday 12th March 2010, out of which 70 people were positively identified as having cataracts. The youngest person operated was a 24 year old man and the oldest was a 105 year old great grandmother! All of these 70 people were thereafter provided FREE cataract surgeries by a team of specialist ophthalmologists based at the Eldoret Hospital. The rest who had other eye problems were referred to various hospitals including the Lions Eye Hospital in Loresho, Sabatia Eye Hospital, Moi Referral Hospital, opticians and other District hospitals for further treatment and advice, depending on the nature of the eye ailment and the locality of their residence.
